The Geebah Issue #23

SOME LIGHT SHED ON THE SPEAK, SORT OF. YOUR EDITOR WAS SICK YESTERDAY, OY VEY. POTTERY SHARD IN HONOR OF NEWEST PHOTOS TO GROUP.

hey folks,

sorry, to get this out so late. i was stricken yesterday. i am on the mend. oh well. at least it is not h1n1. now, one of you asked me to send some love out for db. if you ask your editor to include something in the geebah, i will. so, love to db, he's so pocket! he is. however, i asked for some reminder/info. so, i could get it straight. so, the rest of you would understand what that means. didn't get the reminder. so, this is more oblique than it otherwise might be. that being said, a brother asked for love in geebah #23, there you go. more later, it will only be a little less cryptic. such is the way with dreamspeak, tricky language, very lebowski, lots of ins and outs, lots of angles, lots of interesting parties. abide.

speaking of the speak, i am on a quest to better understand some of the rich language from back in the day that issued forth mostly from todd and alex. sure, we all have a passing knowledge of how to use giba and begah, but there is so much more!

it is very mystical stuff and demands searching, patience and reflection. recently, i discovered that adam egert has an amp called skeburpin reverbin.(adam amps are excellent! http://www.adamamps.com. more on this later!) this discovery got me to ask todd the meaning of skeburpin. of course, it was, very appropriately, on a thread on todd's fb profile about a john hopkins study that concluded that taking "magic" mushrooms was very beneficial. who wants to fund our future research? i know that you professors know. anyway, here was what followed my inquiry about skeburpin.

Billy Cohen .....what does skeburpin mean?

William Bonham I believe the complete phrase is Skeburpin Durkin.....

right todd, so very right! thank you for that. most excellent. i want to live in a world where, not only the members of this group, but a world where little purple children and little children with 27 fingers and world leaders and longshoremen can all let fly with a "vodo n'choo" at the right time. i am still working on it.

there were some new photos posted to the fb group. pianos in parking lots. oh otis, most noble. in honor of those pics, and our friend who posted them. here is this week's shard.

excerpt from "Pretty Miss J"
music & words Avram Lavinsky

I drove 400 miles just to see you
I had no license and no radio
In a broken down van
We bought from some other band
that should have died 10 years ago

I know just what's been darling
We're together such a little while
but after all I've been through
just to get back to you
Pretty Amy won't you give me a smile

She laughed and said
"One bad thing about sunshine baby
One bad thing about love
One bad thing about all good things
is you can never get enough!"

There are some rough cuts from the studio up on there.  Craig Dryer joins us on Hammond Organ and Sax (If there is both piano and organ it is craig on Hammond).  All the stuff is done live in the studio, vocals, solos, etc.  Just like a show.

There is also a video of The West Side All-Stars from the Underground Lounge up our facebook page.

The Rat Report

Not a lot of news, Saints fever is high despite what the bookies are saying. I keep hearing "I wish we were playing the Jets, tho" and I have to agree. If Peyton M. wins he will probably be welcome in his hometown after a few years.

First gig for J. the Savage at Old Point Bar, in Algiers Pt. This is the proverbial neighborhood bar, but these days is a nitely music club (2 bands/eve) but probably still gets a fair share of longshoremen and sailors.(editor's note: got report before gig last night, will have to get more info on sailors and longshoremen) The Mardi Gras season officially began with Krewe de Vieux parade whose traditional mule drawn-floats' themes were mostly a farewell to Nagin. They suffered a terrible fire at their warehouse and worked overtime to pull it off. Dr. John was king and is finishing up a new record in Lafayette. (John Fohl said his guitar tracks were all done last week.) Looking forward to Ricky Bear coming back to town to play some more with Butch Trivette, and should have more JTS gigs for March, too.

Avram Lavinsky

Avram reported in on his recording progress. "Three in the can, and instrumental tracks done on one more. I also was just getting some preproduction stuff together for an oldy but goody I've been meaning to record. It's hard to find the time."

Billy Cohen

On the mend! Needs to get some things done.

Adventures in La-La-Land #5(re-printed from geebah #22)

Wow, it's been an incredible couple weeks down here in the Land of LA. First off, we had a *GREAT* second gig at the bowling alley with Doug Grean sitting in. The band sounded great and Doug added some real rock'n'roll texture to our overall effort. It was fun! Secondly, we launched a new Facebook site for Morning Glory and had about 40 people join  on the first day! Please come join the group… go to Facebook and go to: http://www.facebook.com/#/group.php?gid=280686989668&ref=ts. You'll be able to keep up with all our doings - and we WILL be posting audio links there to ALL our gigs. I'll have the first two All-Star Lanes gigs up there within the next day or two, so please come back and check it out! We just booked our next gig at the Lanes on February 21st. Again, if you are in the L.A. area and want to hear some good tunes, please drop on by! The place has a great vibe and we are really enjoying playing there. In other news, I had a great chat today with Nappy G (Gordon Clay). It was GREAT catching up with him - we haven't talked for a while, so we had a lot to catch up on, but it was so great to hear his voice!  Gordon has been living life on his own terms and making a living as a musician and DJ for many years now, so it was great to talk shop and trade ideas. I certainly hope that as we progress through this next decade, all of us will be looking out for each other wherever possible, and helping to support each other's artistic and musical endeavors. I truly believe we can make some beautiful things happen together. So, let's try not to get stuck in too many 9 - 5 soul-sucking jobs, eh??? Cheers, Doug!

love, love loving you,

b
