The Geebah Issue #18

happy new year all,

we are having a grand old time this holiday season with family and friends and eating and drinking and all. tonight, pookie and pookie and i went to the carnelian room for cocktails. in part, to bid that old san francisco institution farewell.

we had dinner there on our wedding night. though, i felt a little misty that it was closing, i have to say and we said there, "this is the best holiday season we can remember and it is grand to be back at the carnelian room." we hadn't been back since our wedding, and it was great to get in there before it does close on fri.

52 floors up in this most beautiful san francisco is really alright. we are truly having a wonderful time and i am truly thankful for it. i hope you all are with people you love. i hope you are healthy and happy and laughing a lot.

i got a call the other morning, one of my delta phi siblings, dean. he had sad news. he asked me to share it with you. here's something he wrote when he heard the news:

"i am so sorry to inform any columbia folks that vince fanelli passed away on november 21. he was my best buddy @ columbia and i am in tears. like so many of us, vince loved altered states, jam bands, and people. vince loved my quote "i've only been this high a bunch of times". i've only been this sad a bunch of times."

dean may have some other things to write about it for me to share with you. i will. i am sad of the news. i remember vince warmly. i am glad dean called and asked me to share the news. not that anybody needed me to say it, but let me say it, if there is something you want me to share with the group, i will.

pottery shard.
editor's note: this is a term that nathan used at the poetry reading in delta phi after we got kicked out for the renovation and we had started tearing the house apart ourselves. i have a piece of the old parkay floor, a perfect little square of the old house sitting here on my desk.

Adventures in La-La Land #3: The Leboski Jam 2

Greetings from L.A. where the weather is warm and the white russians are delicious! Morning Glory had a great bowling alley gig in Eagle Rock on Dec. 20th; great crowd; great fun; so much so, in fact, that we have been invited back for MLK Jr. Weekend and will be playing all Sunday night January 17th. This is great news since the Occidental College kids will be back and most of them will have Monday off. So we are looking forward to having a great rager. If you have not yet heard the band, worry no more - we have posted most of our last gig on our website. Go to http://www.gloryheads.com and scroll down to the link that says "Listen to the whole show here!". Joel, our intrepid drummer and recording genius, has posted 22 tracks from the show here, so you ought to be able to find something you dig! And if you happen to be in the L.A. area on MLK Wkend, please come stop by: All Star Lanes, 4459 Eagle Rock Blvd., in Eagle Rock (northeast L.A. off the 2 & 134 freeways). If not, please enjoy the tracks. Cheers from La-La-Land, Doug.

There are some rough cuts from the studio up on there.  Craig Dryer joins us on Hammond Organ and Sax (If there is both piano and organ it is craig on Hammond).  All the stuff is done live in the studio, vocals, solos, etc.  Just like a show.

There is also a video of The West Side All-Stars from the Underground Lounge up our facebook page.

Avram Lavinsky

I need to check in and find out if more recording has happened. I know a lot of writing was happening during his commute, I wonder if he has had a break from writing over the holidays. though, the sounds of birds, the boys and silverware in the drawer can inspire compositions. I will find out and report back.

special dreamspeak.com editor's note: in jewish numerology the 18th letter of the hebrew alphabet is chi which is used in the word for life, as in l'chiam which means to life. so, chi represents life and 18 represents life. so, perhaps getting to this 18th issue of the geebah will somehow enliven us. l'chaim all!
